A student of Francis James Child, he developed a deep interest in early poetry, oral traditions, and the evolution of literary forms, contributing significantly to the study of ballads and epic literature. His academic work emphasized the connections between culture, language, and storytelling, seeking to uncover how collective identity and moral values were expressed through oral narratives. Gummere's research blended linguistic precision with historical insight, helping to shape modern approaches to folklore and literary scholarship.
