Helen Rose Hull was born on March 28, 1888, in Albion, Michigan, as the eldest child of Warren C. Hull and Minnie Louise McGill Hull. Her father worked as a teacher, school superintendent, and real estate agent, while her mother was a schoolteacher before marriage. Encouraged early by her grandfather Levi T. Hull, who published her stories in his local newspaper, she took on family financial responsibilities with her brother after her father became unemployed following World War I. Hull attended Lansing High School and Michigan State University before becoming an elementary school teacher. Beginning her writing career in 1914, she published seventeen novels and sixty-five short stories over more than fifty years. Her work often focused on family relationships, gender issues, race, and women's economic status, addressing social concerns through character-driven stories. She taught creative writing for four decades at Columbia University alongside her lifelong partner, Mabel Louise Robinson. Hull also taught at Wellesley and Barnard Colleges. She passed away in 1971 at age 83. Notable works include Quest and Islanders, both reflecting on women's roles and social questions of their times.
