Synopsis

A banished queen returns to her palace courtesy her pet monkey's trick. Riday is cursed by Lord Ganesh and transformed into a yaksha the size of a thumb. Kunkro, the rooster who rules a farmyard, believes it is his call that brings on the daylight. Fables for All Ages brings together Abanindranath Tagore's best writings - Kheerer Putul, Booro-Angla and Alor Phulki - in a single, illuminatingly translated volume. One of the principal forces behind the founding of the Bengal School of Art, Tagore brings to his writing an instantly recognizable visual texture. Compelling and timeless, these have all the makings of a classic, - love, loss, envy and intrigue, and the overarching theme of the age-old contest for survival between man and animal. However, they are also deeply - and characteristically - political at their heart. Set in the late and nineteenth-century - British occupied Bengal and replete with Tagore's Swarajist opinions, these three fables illustrate power play in a world where self-image is paramount and wit is the best way of crises.
