volume analyzes and reframes current challenges with a view to developing
practical new approaches to assist negotiating practitioners overcome
contemporary multilateral problems in international security.

This volume is the first in a series of three produced by the "Disarmament
as Humanitarian Action: Making Multilateral Negotiations Work" project and
published by UNIDIR.
The second volume, entitled "Disarmament as Humanitarian Action: From
Perspective to Practice" was published in May 2006.
The third volume, entitled "Thinking Outside the Box in Multilateral
Disarmament and Arms Control Negotiations" is forthcoming in late 2006.
This publication contains four papers: 'Rethinking multilateral negotiations: disarmament as humanitarian action'; 'Modelling armed violence: a tool for humanitarina dialogue in disarmament and arms control'; 'Deconstructing disarmament: the challenge of making the disarmament and arms control machinery responsive to the humanitarian imperative'; and 'A comparison between arms control and other multilateral negotiation process'.
