Man-made and natural amenities - rural landscapes or natural and historical sites - are increasingly in demand. As the value of many amenities is not fully reflected in market proces, policies play an important role in ensuring that public demand for them is met. This publication highlights the benefits stemming from amenities and the types of policy instruments that reward providers of public interest goods. Examples from eight OECD countries illustrate the many possibilities open to governments interested in pursuing positive management strategies of rural resources.
