Synopsis

The gap between the incomes of rich and poor households excites debate for social, economic and political reasons. Many policy reforms are suggested, or rejected, on the grounds that they narrow or widen the income gap. This study compares income distribution in OECD countries in terms of its dispersion between households on a standardized basis, which is adjusted for household size. Separate contributions of property and employment incomes and the effects of direct taxes and cash transfers are analyzed, and national studies are used to summarize national trends in income distribution since the 1970s.
