To answer this question, 12 OECD countries undertook a common survey of public attitudes towards, and expectations of, education. Areas covered include the importance of different subjects in the school curriculum, responsibility for personal and social development, respect for teachers, teachers' salaries, and decision-making in schools. A clear message about priorities and performance emerges, which should be of interest to policy makers.
