Synopsis

Every cat has nine lives. This time, Penny wakes in the freezing mud of a London street — in the winter of 1595.

A super-intelligent, Italian-speaking choc-point Siamese with nine mythical lives and rather too much attitude, Penny is a CyberCat: born in a virtual world and no prisoner of space or time. Now she finds herself far from her comfortable home in the Blue Mountains, blinking up at the chimneys and clamouring church bells of Elizabethan London.

Rescued from a gutter by a kind, impoverished writer named Will Baldwin, Penny is drawn into the glittering, treacherous world of Shakespeare's theatre — a world of players and patrons, of Burbage and Armin, of a new comedy called A Midsummer Night's Dream being readied for a grand society wedding. It is a dazzling place to be a clever cat.

But Tudor London is dangerous for anyone who knows too much. When Will is summoned by a cruel intelligencer and falls under the shadow of the Queen's spymaster, a whisper of treason could cost him his life. To save her friend, Penny will need every ounce of her wit — and perhaps a little of her magic.

Beware the Cat: The Shakespearean Chronicles is the second book in the CyberCat Series: a warm-hearted, gently comic time-slip fantasy inspired by William Baldwin's 1561 tale of the same name, often called one of the first English novels. Richly researched and full of literary mischief, it's perfect for readers who love clever historical fiction, and a dash of Tudor intrigue.. Each book in the series stands alone, so Penny's adventures can begin here.
