Synopsis

How citizens can create meaningful change in a world of mega-bonuses, super-rich and Big Tech
New book reveals why (and how) we need economic reform before it’s too late.

WHY THIS BOOK IS IMPORTANT

• A global emergency: Wealth continues to rise worldwide, whilst ordinary citizens face stagnant wages, rising living costs, and strained public services. The disparity in wealth is now reaching levels that created conditions for First World War.
• The system is rigged: The super-rich often pay proportionally less tax than workers, starving governments of funds needed for schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. New initiatives such as the UK’s “mansion tax” are attempts to tax the wealthy, but fall short of tackling super-rich issue.

• Democracy at risk: Concentrated wealth brings concentrated political power and citizens across the world are losing their voice.
• A practical, accessible guide: Written in plain English, the book explains complex economic issues through stories, analogies and simple models that show exactly how the system works and how to change it.

Across the world, a tiny minority now controls a disproportionate share of global wealth, with the richest 1% reportedly accounting for almost half the world’s total wealth. Headlines show big tech leaders picking up $1 trillion pay packages, while elsewhere, billions of people struggle to meet the most basic needs.

In his debut book, Bring Down the Billionaires! entrepreneur, social campaigner and author Jean-Paul Fonteijn, makes one thing clear: this crisis is man-made, and that means we can fix it.

Drawing on data and world examples, Fonteijn shows how inequality isn’t an accident, but the result of a financial system engineered to funnel money upward to the ultra-wealthy. He reveals how wealth grows faster than wages, how governments are losing taxable revenue faster than ever and how extreme wealth is turning into extreme political influence. And he warns that if nothing changes, how inequality will accelerate, unrest will deepen, and democracy will weaken.

Yet Fonteijn is not pessimistic - he is urgent and practical. He believes a fairer economy is possible once ordinary people understand the rules of the financial system. Inspired by the work of economist Thomas Piketty, he explains, in simple terms, why current financial rules fuel runaway inequality, the hidden structures that concentrate power, how society can restore balance sustainably and democratically, and why change will not come from politicians alone.

A movement, not just a book
More than 30,000 people from across 150 countries have already pledged their support for Fonteijn’s Super-Rich Tax campaign. The movement calls for an international tax on extreme wealth and a global grassroots movement of citizens demanding change. Instead of waiting for divided governments to act, Fonteijn shows how collective voice and citizen action can rewrite the rules for a fairer economic future.

Clear, urgent, and accessible, Bring Down the Billionaires! is not just another dense economics book – it is a rallying cry for anyone who believes the system is broken and refuses to accept that there is no alternative.
