In this anthology the compiler follows a number of travellers who visited Crete in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The quotations are chosen in such a way that the reader can follow their journeys in his comfortable armchair and can feel a traveller himself. Or he can follow their routes by foot or by car, and enjoy a fascinating and unspoiled Crete. This first volume in a series of three follows travellers like Pashley, Spratt and Lear in central Crete, on their way from Hania to Iraklion. Knossos and its surroundings are also dealt with. The next two parts focus on eastern and western Crete (in preparation). In addition, many ancient myths and legends concerning Crete can be found in the book, directly translated from their Greek and Latin originals, such as the stories of Theseus and the Minotaur, of Europe and the bull, and the birth of Zeus. Also the story of the Atlantis (was it Crete?) is included, as it was written down by Plato.
