De studie van visuele kunst is een gelaagde, caleidoscopische en kritische bezigheid. Het kunsthistorisch perspectief vormt slechts één van de vele invalshoeken om kunst te beschouwen en onderzoeken. Al veel langer woedt de kwestie: vanuit welke andere perspectieven kan kunst zinvol bestudeerd worden? In de muziek- of taalwetenschap is het bijvoorbeeld vanzelfsprekend om uiteenlopende gezichtspunten in te zetten bij reflectie en onderzoek. Dit boek brengt voor het eerst een breed scala van mondiale invalshoeken op kunst bij elkaar, waaronder neurowetenschappelijke, evolutiebiologische, antropologische en geografische benaderingen, naast meer conventionele kunsthistorische perspectieven. Het onderzoekt op kritische manier de premissen en historiografie van de studie van kunst als een wereldwijd verschijnsel, en introduceert vervolgens verschillende nieuwe concepten, `frameworks of denkmodellen. Het boek blijft niet hangen in abstracte modellen, maar laat via case studies zien hoe bepaalde manieren van onderzoeken en beschouwen werken, welk resultaat of nieuwe vragen deze bieden, om vandaaruit een breder, rijker veld te creëren waarin beeldende kunst gelaagder geanalyseerd kan worden.
