Synopsis

For a long time Leendert Louwe Kooijmans has been the face of Dutch prehistory in a European context. This volume contains twenty-three papers on the Mesolithic and Neolithic presented to him by his Dutch and European colleagues and marks his ongoing process of retiring.

About the Authors

Annelou van Gijn is professor of Archaeological Material Culture and Artefact Studies at Leiden University and studied anthropology and archaeology at Washington State University Pullman (US) and the University of Groningen. She obtained her PhD at Leiden University. Her teaching and research focus on prehistoric technology, ancient crafts, experimentation and the reconstruction of the cultural biography of objects, topics on which she published widely.

Dr. Jos Kleijne (1987, Beverwijk, the Netherlands) is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 1266) `Scales of Transformation’ at Kiel University in Germany. Between November 2014 and March 2018 he wrote his PhD at the Graduate School `Human Development in Landscapes’ at Kiel University. Before this time, he was shortly working as a private researcher (during that time he wrote a book about Kennemerland in the Bronze Age on behalf of the Province of North Holland). Between 2010 and 2013 he worked at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, as a researcher for the Later Prehistory of the Netherlands. Here he was partly responsible for the Odyssee-project “Unlocking North Holland’s Late Neolithic Treasure Chest”, for which the three site monographs were produced. He obtained his Research Master degree at Leiden University in 2010. His research interests span the Neolithic and the Bronze Age and range from the technological analysis of material culture to using modern techniques (micromorphology, Bayesian modelling, biochemistry) in understanding prehistoric settlements.

Between Foraging and Farming is liber amicorum for prof. Leendert Louwe Kooijmans, former dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. Neolithisation has been Louwe Kooijmans' research field since the nineteen-sixties and that is the reason why the topic of this book is the Meso-Neo transition.

Twenty-three researchers contributed to this volume, among them colleagues from the Faculty like Corrie Bakels, Annelou van Gijn , Pieter van de Velde and Harry Fokkens, but also from other Dutch institutes like Marjorie de Grooth and Jan Albert Bakker, and colleagues from abroad like Bryony Coles, Alasdair Whittle, Richard Bradley, Peter Bogucki, Søren Andersen and Haio Zimmermann. A fitting homage for a great researcher.
