Spanning the whole of Rietveld's career, the book charts his development as architect, designer and innovator. The body of his work displays Rietveld's delicate balance of form, function and friendliness. The illustrations demonstrate his diverse and creative use of colours, materials and techniques. Renewed interest in Rietveld as a result of the 1987 transfer of some of his major works to the Centraal Museum Utrecht's renovated Rietveld Schroder house led to the publication of this catalogue raisonee. Included are six texts by Rietveld himself which define his philosophy. The result is a complete look at one of the century's most creative architects. From his furniture to his social housing projects, this book emphasizes Rietveld's fine blend of functionality and aesthetics. The book won the AIA 1993 International Book Award.

393 pp.; 26 x 24 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white & color; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, November 28, 1992 - September 21, 1993. Traveled to the Centre Pompidou, Paris, June 23 - September 27, 1993. Texts by Gerrit Rietvald, Marijke Küper, and Ida van Zijl. Includes biographical data, bibliography, and index. "This complete catalogue is the result of a long and intensive study of the work of Gerrit Rietveld (1888 - 1964). When, in 1987, the Rietveld Schröder House and Archive were transferred to the Centraal Museum Utrecht, it was a major stimulus for research into the archives and documentation concerning Rietveld. The available material was thoroughly analyzed and inventoried with assistance from the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam. At the same time, various museum and private collections were studied, while over a two-year period, all the houses designed by Rietveld were visited [.] An unexpected result of this work has been the discovery of the vast range and extent of Rietveld's oeuvre. He was interested, besides architecture and design, in typography, the use of color, and experimenting with materials. Even before the Second World War, he was involved in social housing, with standard methods of production, prefab materials, and urban planning: his aim was to create neighborhoods where light and space would make life more pleasant. This publication provides a complete overview of Rietveld's multi-faceted [sic] highly productive career. The designs that he realized, as well as those never actually made, have been chronologically listed. With more than seven hundred illustrations, the complete work of Rietveld is now visually accessible. In the catalogue, you will also find six texts by Rietveld himself as well as a list of biographical details and a chronologically ordered bibliography." -- from dust-jacket flap. Text in English.
