Synopsis
Spanning the whole of Rietveld's career, the book charts his development as architect, designer and innovator. The body of his work displays Rietveld's delicate balance of form, function and friendliness. The illustrations demonstrate his diverse and creative use of colours, materials and techniques. Renewed interest in Rietveld as a result of the 1987 transfer of some of his major works to the Centraal Museum Utrecht's renovated Rietveld Schroder house led to the publication of this catalogue raisonee. Included are six texts by Rietveld himself which define his philosophy. The result is a complete look at one of the century's most creative architects. From his furniture to his social housing projects, this book emphasizes Rietveld's fine blend of functionality and aesthetics. The book won the AIA 1993 International Book Award.
