Synopsis

As yet, little is known about how stroke patients should be optimally rehabilitated. This book presents new perspectives in the study of functional recovery after a stroke. In order to cope with the heterogeneity of the stroke population, a strong case is made for the use of a controlled single case experimental design. This alternative methodology is then applied to studying the differences in treatment effects between the neuro-developmental treatment and the Brunnstrom method, as well as the generalization of perception on training to activities of daily living for patients with visual inattention. Finally, the possible relevance of modern developments in motor control theory for physical therapy comes to the fore in an investigation of hemiplegic and healthy gait patterns from the perspective of non-linear dynamics. In this way, another attempt is made to break away from the deadlock in stroke rehabilitation research. This volume should be of interest to physiotherapists and those interested in stroke rehabilitation research.
