Het is 1943. Kort nadat de moeder het gezin heeft verlaten, komt er een nieuwe vrouw in huize Verschuur wonen: tante Ank. Als zij trouwt met de vader van de achtjarige Rita wordt zij `de tweede moeder'. Ze krijgt met hem drie kinderen.
