Today's buildings are designed with digital tools and produced by digitally controlled methods. This construction technology now requires us to reevaluate our conception of the realization and the look of architecture, since these means enable a degree of bespoke design that was previously impossible. Alongside the issue of the paradigm shift entailed by this evolution, a simple aesthetic question arises: will formal variation and uniqueness become the preferred mode as the economic rationale for repetition becomes obsolete? In this guidebook for "non-standard architecture," Kas Oosterhuis considers his own practice in the context of recent developments in the field of design and communication technologies. He focuses on two particular paradigm shifts: the movement from architecture based on mass production to architecture based on industrially produced made-to-measure components; and the related transition from a static architecture to a dynamic and interactive architecture.

Nonstandard architecture is de architectuur van maatwerk. Het gebouw van deze tijd wordt ontworpen met digitale middelen, en wordt uitgevoerd met digitaal gestuurde productiemethoden. Dit leidt tot een revolutie in het denken over de aard en uitvoering van het ontwerp. Bovendien start het een geheel nieuwe discussie over wat mooi is in de architectuur. Is repetitie nog wel mooi, of zullen variatie en uniciteit in vorm als mooi ervaren worden. Maatwerk gebaseerd op computergestuurde productiemethoden betekent dat alle samenstellende bouwcomponenten per definitie uniek zijn. De economische reden voor repeterende elementen vervalt. Kas Oosterhuis beschrijft in dit boek zijn praktijk en plaatst zijn ontwerpen in de context van recente maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen, met name op het gebied van de ICT. Centraal staan twee paradigmaverschuivingen: van architectuur gebaseerd op massaproductie naar architectuur gebaseerd op industrieel maatwerk, en van een statische architectuur naar een dynamische en interactieve architectuur.

In 1990 richtten architect Kas Oosterhuis en beeldend kunstenaar Ilona Lénárd hun bureau ONL [Oosterhuis_Lénárd] op. Zij zijn gespecialiseerd in het ontwerpen en bouwen van sculptuurgebouwen op grote schaal. Hun spraakmakende gebouwde projecten als het Zoutwaterpaviljoen, het iWEB, de Cockpit en de CET beschrijft Oosterhuis vanuit het perspectief van de ontwerper, waarbij visie en praktijk, theorie en realiteit, intuïtie en logica, nauw verbonden zijn.

Kas Oosterhuis heeft in 2000 als praktijkprofessor aan de TU Delft de onafhankelijke onderzoeks- en onderwijs afdeling Hyperbody opgericht, en leidt het onlangs geopende protoSPACE laboratorium voor immediate design and engineering.
