Synopsis

David McKitterick focuses on some aspects of the international trade in both new and old books to explore how the history of the book might be developed in the future. McKitterick concentrates on bookselling as a means of coming to a fuller understanding of how to approach an international history of the book. The Frederik Muller lectures are named after the founder of the Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak (Library of the Book Trade), which is preserved at the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam. This first lecture of the series was organized by the Special Collections in cooperation with the Department of Book History and Manuscript Studies, the Society for the Library of the Book Trade and the Institute for Culture and History of the University of Amsterdam.

In ‘A Changing View from Amsterdam’ neemt David McKitterick ons mee naar de tijd van Frederik Muller (1817-1881) en de negentiende-eeuwse antiquarische handel in boeken in Europa. Hij richt zich hierbij op een aantal aspecten van de internationale handel, in zowel nieuwe als oude boeken. Zo probeert hij tot een antwoord te komen op de vraag over hoe het boek zich in de toekomst zou kunnen gaan ontwikkelen en hoe de internationale geschiedenis van ‘het boek’ benaderd zou moeten worden.

David McKitterick is werkzaam als bibliothecaris van het Trinity College, Cambridge, lid van The British Academy en is Honorary Professor in Historical Bibliography aan de Cambridge University.

De Frederik Muller lezingen zijn vernoemd naar de oprichter van de Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak, welke in de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam opgenomen is. Deze eerste lezing van de reeks werd georganiseerd door de Bijzondere Collecties in samenwerking met het ministerie van Boek Geschiedenis en Manuscript Studies, het Genootschap voor de Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak en het Instituut voor Cultuur en Geschiedenis van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
