Synopsis

This book deals with the problem of modelling mechanical systems. In most real cases the well-known modelling linear theory of vibrations cannot be used, and non-linear must be resorted too. This implies two main processes: The first is finding a way to model the real mechanical system you are studying. The two chapters of this book which deal with parametric and non-parametric identification describe useful tools and give a survey of present knowledge. The difference between these two parameters, and in the other parameters without any physical meaning, or only black-box procedures. Special attention is paid to the Volterra kernels methods. The second is improving the mathematical computations of the solutions of the model, and then using the new tools obtained in the first process. The main problem here is to build a non-linear theory of modal synthesis, so several papers introduce non-linear modes. Many other topics are touched on, such as shock analysis, the stability of non-linear mechanical systems, chaotic behaviour; and number of fields ranging from civil engineering to biomechanics are concerned.
