Synopsis
This volume contains 25 new essays on the interplay of the sacred and profane as a dominant feature of 16th and 17th century literature in Britain. The authors discussed, range from Wyatt and Surrey to Rochester and Behn, and a wide variety of genres, from Scottish love lyrics and Shakespearian drama to "Paradise Lost" and Quaker prose. The issues addressed within the framework of the sacred and profane range from Catholic poetics to sexual politics, and at the centre of the volume is an extended treatment of the work of John Donne. Together, the essays form a study of a major aspect of early-modern British culture. Helen Wilcox and Richard Todd are the editors of "George Herbert: Sacred and Profane".
