How have cohabitation, marriage, divorce and disruption of cohabitation changed in the Netherlands in recent generations of women? This book gives insight into historic and life course-specific influences on the formation and dissolution of first unions of women in the Netherlands. It demonstrates the influence of early life course experiences on union formation and dissolution, the principle of later life course experiences replacing earlier ones and the competition of the educational, occupational and fertility career with union formation and dissolution. The multivariate event history analyses cover entry into a first union, either by cohabitation or by marriage, the transition from cohabitation to marriage, and the disruptions of first unions. The analyses were made with data from the Netherlands Fertility and Family Survey 1988 on nearly 6000 women born between 1950 and 1969.
