Het hart van de reisbeschrijvingen in Rode regen vormt Cees Nootebooms eigen huis op het eiland Menorca, waarnaar hij al decennialang elke zomer terugkeert om te schrijven. Onder de tintelende beschrijvingen schuilt ook de diepe vraag in hoeverre zijn herinneringen waarheid bevatten. Nooteboom heeft altijd geworsteld met zijn onbetrouwbare geheugen en geeft daar in deze bundel, onder andere aan de hand van oude dagboeken en reisverslagen, verbluffende voorbeelden van. Hij neemt de jeugdige schrijver die hij eens was hardhandig de maat. Zo bezien bevat de rode regen, die op Menorca valt omdat het rode zand van de Sahara in de druppels wordt meegevoerd, ook het bloed uit de vingertoppen van de jongeling die ooit, vijftig jaar geleden, na zijn eerste reis naar het Zuiden, de pen op papier zette. Hij keerde terug met het verhaal voor zijn debuutroman Philip en de anderen en begon toen te beseffen welke reis het leven voor hem in petto had.
