Synopsis

Preface: The 2006 annual conference of the Europe Chapter of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society was held in Sheffield, England. This publication summarises the content of that meeting, with contributions based on presentations that were given. The book begins with a written version of the keynote address by Neville Moray, who has personally witnessed the history of Human Factors from its beginning, and has managed to condense his detailed "personal view" into 30 pages. Apart from the keynote, 44 papers are included, grouped into seven chapters. Eva Fabriek has kindly illustrated these chapters and the cover with her "lelijke poppetjes" ("ugly little figures"). A big thanks to Eva, amongst other things, for giving her view on "Bird Strike" (p. 461). We are indebted to all who made the meeting and the book a success. In particular we would like to thank the external reviewers, who took the trouble to support us editors and evaluate the manuscripts thoroughly, and The University of Sheffield Department of Psychology for hosting us. The conference was also supported by the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development of the USAF, under Award No. FA8655-07-1-5004. We are very grateful for all this support.
