Orphan Objects: Facets of the Textiles Collection of the Joods Historisch Museum, Amsterdam - Hardcover
Synopsis
Textiele voorwerpen die een rol spelen in de joodse rite waren niet in de eerste plaats bedoeld als kunstobjecten. Ze zijn dat nu als museumstukken nog steeds niet. Objecten als Torah-mantels en synagoge-kleden, die een belangrijk bestanddeel vormen van de collectie van het Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam, hebben hun rol gespeeld in diverse onderdelen van het joodse leven. In Orphan Objects is daarom gekozen voor een benadering die zo veel mogelijk facetten van het economische, sociale, culturele en rituele leven van deze textielobjecten naar voren brengt. De geselecteerde topstukken uit de textielcollectie van het museum worden begeleid door teksten die zowel analytisch als documentair zijn. In de eerste plaats wordt aangegeven hoe de diverse voorwerpen onderdeel zijn gaan uitmaken van de verzameling van het Joods Historisch Museum en hoe ze ons nu in contact brengen met de 'werkelijkheid' van het verleden. Dan komt de confrontatie met de godsdienstige traditie ter sprake: de ambivalente verhouding van het jodendom met de beeldende kunst. Vervolgens de fabricage van voorwerpen uit nieuwe en hergebruikte materialen, zowel door mannen als vrouwen, waarbij allerlei sociale aspecten uit het Nederlands-joodse verleden aan de orde komen. Ook de grote en kleine 'werelden' van onder meer schenkers en verenigingen, die schuil gaan achter bijvoorbeeld vaandels, voorhangen en gebedskleden, geven de voorwerpen een extra dimensie. Ten slotte wordt in Orphan Objects teruggekeerd naar de geschiedenis van het joodse identiteitsvraagstuk, van een kleine gemeenschap in een tamelijk vriendelijke omgeving, en van het jongste en allernaarste verleden, om het verhaal van deze 'weesobjecten' - die in het Joods Historisch Museum een nieuwe kans op leven krijgen - af te ronden.
