Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). This Is the original edition from 1971. I'm offering it at a price considerably below the few others that are for sale. This is NOT the reprint from 2011. As you can see from the photographs, the covers are in very good condition. They don't have much wear it all. They are clean. This book is solidly bound. The pages are very clean. In fact I didn't see any instances of soiling or staining. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There aren't any markings or attachments. The only imperfection I see is quite minor, a mild bump to the bottom left-hand corner of the rear cover close to very slight crease that can be seen as well on the last 10 or so pages. As I said, it is quite mild. From the back cover of the book: 'The present monograph survey some fifty odd interpretations of the legend of Jonah, from the New Testament through the English Renaissance. This survey illustrates the application of a variety of methods: Judaic typology, moralistic analogy, Hellenistic allegory, as well as the purely literal, historical method. Singled out for detailed attention are major commentators such as St. Jerome and Nicholas of Lyra; and the renditions of the Jonah story in the anonymous Middle English homiletic poem Patience (XIV cent.), and in the Elizabethan commercial play, A Looking-Glass for London and England (1594), by Greene and Lodge. The Book of Jonah has attracted the interests of many scholars during the past century, notably Hugh Martin, whose The Prophet Jonah appeared in 1866, and David E. H. Davies, whose Jonah appeared in 1925; but neither of these works attempted an historical survey of Patristic or Renaissance commentaries so they do not compete in this respect with the present work. It is hoped that this monograph will provide students with a useful account of the various ways in which various earlier writers responded to one of the most beautiful books of the Old Testament '.
