What is the basis of chess masters' striking ability to quickly capture, retain and recall the information contained in an unknown, complex chess position? This is the psychological question addressed in this work. After explaining basic issues im memory experimentation, the text reports on a re-analysis of a broad experimental study. The authors provides additional analyses on eye movements, and confronts the relevance of the data with recent results in cognitive psychology. They then presents a computer model of chess memory and perception, which offers a good fit to the empirical data.
