Synopsis

The International Seminar "The Role of Draught Animal Technology in Rural Development" which was held in Edinburgh in April 1990, was jointly organized by Larenstein International Agricultural College Deventer, the Netherlands, and the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. In total, 32 participants from 18 different countries and 4 continents participated in the seminar. This volume of proceedings contains the keynote addresses delivered at the seminar by senio specialists on the themes of rural development, farming systems, governmental and non-governmental intervetion and economic aspects of animal traction. A number of position papers by the participants have also been included. For this seminar a special methodoloft was development, with emphasis on active participation of all parties concerned. This was most evident during the workshops, in which both keynote addresses and position papers were discussed and used to develop a "check list". Although already extensive, this check list on the development of draught animal techology does not pretend to be complete.

Many aspects are listed and users are requested to ajust and elaborate the list, to make it complete for use under specific conditions.
