Hardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD. viii, 219pp. 8vo, Navy cloth, gilt stamped lettering. Neat pencil checks in the margins through p. 114. Very clean and sound otherwise. The first volume in Brills heralded 'Islamic Philosophy and Theology' series. 'This ad litteram commentary on Book Lambda (XII) of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Ibn Rushd provides his readers with a wealth of philosophical commentary, citing the translated commentaries of Alexander and Themistius as well as the work of Islamic thinkers such as Ibn Sina, whose emanation- ist interpretation of Aristotelian metaphysics Ibn Rushd criticizes in detail. This final book of Ibn Rushd's Great Commentary is not only a valuable source for understanding the meta physical thought of this great Islamic self- professed Aristotelian on the nature of the deity and the world's eternal relation to its non-creationist cause; it also provides some key texts which are the bases for the vehe mence with which his psychological teachings were attacked by Christian thinkers of the medieval West. These texts and many others which provide the reader with a clear view of many of Ibn Rushd's key philosoph- ical teachings clearly justify this selection for translation from the massive Great Commen- tar.
