A key figure in American and international architecture, Richard Meier (1934) is considered one of the most important contemporary architects today. This monograph documents eighteen of his most recent projects, ranging from private homes to museums, commercial and public buildings. Since the latter half of the 1960s, the rise, establishment and creative development of Richard Meier have been characterised by a slow but determined reflection on modernity, its foundations and the possibility of its still being an element of renewal today. This book aims to paint a picture of the works and projects realised over the last decade; mature works that correspond to the definitive consecration of Meier as one of the masters of contemporary architecture. The reflections on a sunny modernism and the conceptual offshoot of abstract culture overlie his thinking on the city and the contemporary landscape and can be easily deduced from many of the recent works including the major complex for the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Museum of the Ara Pacis in Rome, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the City Hall and Central Library at The Hague, to name a few.
The projects featured in the book reveal how Meier's works have taken on the status of icons of modern architecture.Silvio Cassarą is an architect and professor of Architectural History at the University of Bologna, Italy. A visiting professor at several American universities, he is an attentive observer of American projects–New York in particular. His primary interests are American modernism and the work of Richard Meier?
