The thirty-sixth Geneva Motor Show had the honour of hosting the 1966 launch of a new Alfa Romeo sports car with characteristic boat-tail styling; the unmistakable 1600 spider, later officially baptized the Duetto. After years of honourable service therefore, the classic and successful Giulietta spider had to step down in favour of a model that, in its turn, was to be just as successful in carrying on Alfa's long and glorious open sports car tradition. Apart from the excellence of its mechanical specification, derived from that of the Giulia, the Duetto owed much of its success to its very individual styling, developed by Pininfarina through a long series of prototypes, from the 1956 Super Flow to the Giulietta Spider Speciale Aerodinamica of 1961. Catapulted to world-wide attention by the film "The Graduate" starring Dustin Hoffman, the Duetto's styling proved so innovative and yet at the same time so "classic", that it has lasted over twenty years, going through four distinct series in the process. Giancenzo Madaro traces the complex and multivarious pattern of the Duetto's development, the frequent tail surgery and the grafting on of spoilers, right up to the introduction of the current model, which was presented in the spring of 1990. With the help of numerous illustrations, the book describes all of the Alfa Romeo spiders from 1966 to the present day, including the American versions. It provides the reader with accurate technical files, production data, chassis and engine numbers, as well as previously unpublished material on the spider that continues to set-pulses racing.
