Synopsis

Recognized in 2015 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in the Memory of the World category, the manuscript, an illuminated Greek Gospel Book, preserves the Gospel of Matthew, almost all of the Gospel of Mark and a part of Eusebius's letter to Carpiano on concordance of the Gospels. Today the Gospels of Luke and John are lost. Its 188 purple membranaceous sheets, in biblical capital letters, are written with gold and silver characters and, occasionally, in black inks. The work is embellished with 12 miniatures depicting events from the life of Jesus, and the full-page depiction of the Evangelist Mark with the Sophia.
