The European Union Prize focuses on the important contributions of European professionals to the development of new architectural concepts and technologies, and provides citizens as well as public institutions with the opportunity to reach a better understanding of the cultural role of architecture in the construction of cities and communities. Furthermore, the Prize seeks to acknowledge the rich and varied panorama of architectural production in Europe and encourage professionals to work widely throughout the European Union by fostering transnational commissions. It also aspires to support emerging architects as they start out on their careers. The jury of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2001 decided to award the prize to the Kursaal Centre in San Sebasti n (Spain) by Rafael Moneo. Other finalists were: the Dutch Pavilion Expo 2000 by MVRDV, New German Parliament by Norman Foster, Botanical Garden by Carlos Ferrater, Borneo Sporenburg by Adriaan Geuze and West 8, Museum Het Valkhof by UN Studio, and GSW HEadquarters by Sauerbruch Hutton.
