Synopsis
Esta inesperada novela fue escrita en 1929 por el joven Spender, quien la abandonó en borrador y la olvidó durante más de medio siglo hasta publicarla en 1988. Es innegablemente autobiográfica y trata de las vivencias de un joven poeta de Oxford durante unas vacaciones en Alemania y de su reacción espontánea ante el universo social y cultural de la República de Weimar. Las fiestas en los salones Bauhaus de Hamburgo, el naturismo de los «hijos del sol», los viajes por el Rin… Un paraíso que pronto desaparecería bajo el yugo del nazismo. El libro está dedicado a la memoria de tres viejos amigos del autor: W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood y el fotógrafo Herbert List, que aparecen disfrazados como personajes en la novela.
