357pp , ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Robert von Ranke Graves ( Wimbledon , London, July 24, 1895 - Deya , December 7, 1985 ) was a British writer and scholar , father of the writer and translator Lucia Graves.Graves educated in Charterhouse School earning a scholarship to St. John's College (University of Oxford ) , where he continued his studies. Deya house . At the outbreak of World War enlisted in the army in the Royal Welch Fusiliers ; sent to the front , the horrors he witnessed on the battlefield marked him deeply. His first volume of poetry was published in 1916 , but later try to hide the poems written during the war. During the Battle of the Somme, the same year he was injured so severely that his family was informed of his death. However , he recovered, although they were sequelae in the lungs, and spent the rest of the war in England, trying in vain to return to the front. In 1917 , Graves played a leading role in saving his friend Siegfried Sassoon, also a poet and a member of the same regiment , the charge of desertion by a court martial after being AWOL and directed his commander a letter denouncing the war . The event was the subject of Pat Barker 's novel Regeneration . Through Sassoon, Graves met Wilfred Owen , whose talent recognized , and he invited to his wedding to Nancy Nicholson in 1918. After his marriage, Graves enrolled at the University of Oxford as he opened a small shop to stay , but the business ended in failure. In 1926 he got a job at the University of Cairo , where he was accompanied by his wife , his children and the poet Laura Riding . With Riding founded the Seizin Press and was published two well-received academic works : A Survey of Modernist Poetry ( 1927) and A Pamphlet Against Anthologies (1928 ) . In 1929 he moved with Riding Deya , Mallorca Island who had to leave in 1936 by the Spanish civil war. In 1929 he published his autobiography Goodbye to All That ( ' Goodbye to All That ' , revised by him and published again in 1957 ) , a w
