258pp , ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Jonathan Winson , founder of dream analysis , dies at 84 years. " The dreams were never designed to be remembered , but are key to what we are . " Widely considered the founder of modern dream analysis , Jonathan Winson , who wrote these words in 1985 , the bridge of the fields of psychoanalysis and neurobiology to elucidate the biological basis and evolutionary imperative of dreams. Dr. Winson , associate professor emeritus of Rockefeller University , died on February 3 , of pneumonia in Santa Monica , California. He was 84 years old. February 20, 1923 in New York City , Dr. Winson received his degree in mechanical engineering at City College of New York in 1944 and his master's degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of New York the following year. After completing an undergraduate degree in the same field at the California Institute of Technology and a doctorate in applied mathematics from Columbia University , Dr. Winson took over management of the new manufacturing business York with his family his brother , Mike Winson . The longstanding fascination with sleep and dreams led him in 1967 to join the Rockefeller University , as an apprentice at the Laboratory of Physiological Psychology Neil Miller . Through studies of rat brain , Dr. Winson reasoned that the key to understanding the theta rhythm dreams , sinusoidal waveforms that occur in the brains of all vertebrates and synchronize transmissions neuronal occur during waking experience in order to store them in long short-term memory during rapid eye movement ( REM ) sleep, the dream state when most dreams occur . He made two remarkable discoveries about the theta rhythm : its removal results in severe deficits in long-term memory , which occurs during specific behaviors of the species , which are crucial for survival. Dr. Winson also showed that the flow of information through the hippocampus , the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, is at its highes
