Ariel is a long essay by the Uruguayan critic José Enrique Rodó (1871–1917) which emphasizes spiritual values as against exclusively materialist progress. This edition contains the Spanish text of the essay, with a long introduction, based on extensive research in the Rodó Archives.

Figura señera del pensamiento y de las letras uruguayas, crítico y ensayista de gran profundidad, alcanzó renombre continental cuando, en 1900, apareció su libro "Ariel", que sería muy pronto considerado como el breviario espiritual de la juventud americana. Humanista y lírico a la vez, puede decirse que Rodó fue el primero que en América dio la señal de alerta acerca de los peligros del utilitarismo sajón, oponiendo a éste su fe en los valores espirituales y estéticos de la cultura grecolatina.
