Abu Muhammad Ali Ibn Hazm nacio en Cordoba en 994, en una familia aristocratica muladi (practicante de la religion musulmana sin ser arabe) y vivio hasta los quince anos en la corte cordobesa. Su padre era un alto funcionario al servicio del visir Almanzor durante los califatos de al Hakem II y de su sucesor Hixam II. Muerto Hixam II en el ano 1002, la familia siguio al servicio de la casa Amiri, con sus sucesores, al Muzzafar, de brillante y breve trayectoria y Abd al Rahman Sanyul (Sanchuelo), descendiente por linea materna del rey Sancho Garces II de Navarra. El califato llego a su fin y la familia de Ibn Hazm, de filiacion amiri, cayo en descredito y abandono la actividad publica. Tras la muerte de su padre en 1012, cuando Ibn Hazm apenas tenia dieciocho anos, fue perseguido y sus bienes fueron confiscados. Por lo que tuvo que refugiarse en Almeria, al amparo del emir Jayran, quien le mantuvo en su corte hasta que su defensa de la restauracion omeya le gano nuevos enemigos. Tras este nuevo conflicto vivio largo tiempo en Jativa donde escribio gran parte de su obra y participo en la expedicion que desde alli emprendio el califa omeya Murtada y que fue derrotada en las inmediaciones de Granada, siendo apresado Ali ibn Hazm. Liberado de su cautiverio volvio a Jativa hacia el ano 1019. Alli se cree que escribio su obra mas celebre, El collar de la Paloma. Tras la restauracion omeya de Cordoba en el ano 1023, Ibn Hazm marcho a Cordoba, donde fue nombrado visir. Este gobierno tuvo una corta existencia y en 1024 fue encarcelado otra vez. Al salir de prision, renuncio a la politica y se centro en obra literaria y filosofica. La obra de Ibn Hazm abarca unos 400 volumenes. Destacan entre estos El Fisal, historia critica de las ideas religiosas, y La Chambara, genealogia arabe del occidente musulman. Ibn Hazm murio en Montijar en el ano 1064, en la provincia de Huelva.
