Writers of more complex books complained to us that our notebook was not sufficient for their needs, as they required more characters, scenarios or scenes. These authors also asked for a hard cover, as they would use their notebook/workbook far more intensively. So we listened to their needs and extended the workbook in the hardcover edition so as to allow to document more complex novels.

Why an author’s notebook/workbook?

I have published over seventy (yes, 70) books and I always carry around a notebook, in particular when I am working on a complex novel. There I record scenes, characters, locations... anything that allows me to develop the plot of my story. Over the years, I have found that it makes a lot of sense to write down some things, no matter how briefly. For example, does the main character cough? Is it because he smokes, because he has a cold or because he has a pulmonary disease since he was a child? Identifying these little details is what provides depth to your masterpiece and its characters, but all too often we forget these little details despite the fact that we might have to remember them at a specific moment of the plot, or if wanting to reuse the character for another novel. The cigarette on the crime scene could belong to him or would his illness prevent him from smoking in the first place?

This is not just a notebook

It is also a workbook with five major sections: Plots, characters, scenarios and locations, events or turning points and scenes. Each of these major sections has blocks to document these little or (big) brushstrokes that will provide further life to your novel. How did the crime scene smell? What could you hear there?
