Beatrix Pfleiderer, Ph.D., was tenured Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hamburg, Germany, from 1982 to 1992. In the 1990s she trained with leading transpersonal psychologists in California. She leads workshops internationally and works in private practice in Germany and Hawaii.

The stories were experienced and collected at a Muslim Pilgrimage Center of a Sufi (Suhrawardi) order in Gujarat. The field trips during which this material was collected took place between 1979 and 1982. Financial support came from the German Research Association and the University of Hamburg.
