Synopsis

This book aims to introduce fuzzy matrix theory as a basic framework for characterizing the full scope of the fuzzy sets concept and its relationship with the increasingly important concept of information and complexity in various sciences and professions. The book provides a wide coverage on the theoretical developments of fuzzy matrices and fuzzy vector spaces, on the theory of generalized inverses for fuzzy matrices, on fuzzy relations and on partial orderings on fuzzy matrices. The book also discusses the role of fuzzy matrices in the spectral theory of linear transformations on finite dimensional vector spaces. The concept of fuzzy matrix and its applications in document retrieval system, medical diagnosis, database management system, decision making theory and dynamical systems are developed iteratively and illustrated with suitable examples wherever necessary. Each chapter has brief notes and exercises for the benefit of students.

About the Author

Dr. Arunachalam Meenakshi, currently Dean of Mathematics and Computer Applications, Karpagam University, Coimbatore, was formerly Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Annamalai University. She was the Dean, Faculty of Science, Annamalai University, during 2002–2004 and AICTE-Emeritus Fellow during 2004–2007 in Annamalai University. She was a visiting professor in the Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Canada. She is the recipient of the Women Scientist Award of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in 1999 for her work in Matrix Theory. She has been the author or co-author of over 100 journal articles and editor of various conference proceedings. Dr. Meenakshi is a member of the American Mathematical Society and life-member of Ramanujan Mathematical Society. She received her B.Sc. (1964) and M.Sc. (1966) degrees in Mathematics from the University of Madras; M. Math (1970) degree in Pure Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and her Ph.D. (1974) degree in Mathematics from Annamalai University. She has guided more than 12 Ph. D. and 43 M. Phil. students. Her biography has been included in the eighth edition of the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership and seventh edition of the International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women.
