A Few Remarks About the Book from the Authors
My coauthors and I thank you for your interest in this book. To tell you the truth, we had a controversial view in mind when we wrote this book. We wrote it as a manifesto to argue for a new role for Human Resources as a strategic leader of the human side of the enterprise. Just as engineers are not shy about exerting forceful leadership about technology, we believe that Human Resource practitioners should not be shy about exerting forceful leadership on the human side of the enterprise. Our opinion is that organizations can "buy" almost anything they need--except a truly productive, creative workforce capable of achieving quantum leaps in productivity improvement. Human Resource practitioners--and line managers--bear key responsibilities in creating that environment. They should not be shy about taking decisive action to do just that.

This book focuses on practices tested in the real world to help Human Resource leaders position their organizations for success in managing six key trends unfolding in the future. These six key trends are: (1) changing technology; (2) increasing globalization; (3) continuing cost containment; (4) increasing speed in market change; (5) growing importance of knowledge capital; and (6) increasing rate and magnitude of change. For each trend the book addresses such questions as: (1) what is the trend? (2) what causes the trend? (3) what are the likely consequences of the trend? (4) what action plans or strategies should be formulated to address the trend? and (5) what Human Resource leadership competencies are necessary to implement the action plan?

You can learn much from this book, whether you are a line manager, Human Resource practitioner or employee.
