Synopsis

The sixth century rock-cut cave temple on Elephanta island in the middle of Mumbai Harbour is the home of Shiva, the greatest of all the Hindu gods. Elephanta leads you through this magnificent cave temple, supplying an historical background, examining its overall architectural structure and interpreting the myths of Shiva that are depicted in the extraordinary stone sculptures. This book also contains fascinating accounts of European travellers documenting their discovery of the cave from the seventeenth century onwards, and includes information on the ongoing efforts to preserve this cave that was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. This book, richly illustrated with approximately 150 colour and thirty black and white illustrations, is excellent value.
