Synopsis
This festschrift is the first of a four-volume series in honor of Professor Yogendra Singh, one of the most eminent scholars of sociology in India. The present volume outlines not only Singh's academic journey and the worldview of his ideas on the relevance of Western sociology, but also the major concerns and challenges before sociologists in India, more so in the context of globalization. Several essays extensively and critically reflect on his academic contributions and his personality and also examine how sociology is transforming in the wake of globalization. Modernization, Globalization and Social Transformation focuses on the conceptual dimensions of the concerned phenomena and the interlinkages, as well as the detailed relationship of these phenomena with other contemporary social and sociological concerns, such as marginalization, social movements, the middle class, consumer culture, technology, ethnicity, and global society. Issues of modernity and post-modernity are also analyzed in a wider context.
