R.J. Garde obtained M.S. and Ph.D. from Colorado State University, U.S.A. and D.Sc. from Poona University, India. He was Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Roorkee, India and was engaged in teaching and research in Fluid Mechanics and Fluvial Hydraulics and the related consultancy work. He was also Pro Vice Chancellor at Indira Gandhi National Open University, India during 1988 91. He is Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and Institution of Engineers (India), and Member of IAHR and IWRS. He is co–author of text book on Engineering Fluid Mechanics and a book on Mechanics of Sediment Transportation and Alluvial Stream Problems, and author of book on Fluid Mechanics through Problems.
Turbulent Flow is the outcome of author s teaching of the course on Advanced Fluid Mechanics to post–graduate students over a number of years, and represents an enlarged version of monograph on the same topic written by the author and published by the University of Roorkee in 1977. The book is written with the purpose that, through this book practising engineers and post–graduate students are exposed to the advances in the field of turbulent flow and their implications in practice. There has been a long felt need for such a book because, in spite of a number of books published on the subject, very little of the new information on the subject has permeated to the practising engineers dealing with hydraulic analysis and design, building aerodynamics and environmental analysis and design. In ten chapters the book covers laminar flow, transition from laminar to turbulent flow, nature of turbulence, equations of motion, statistical theory of turbulence, turbulence models, turbulence measurement, and descriptions of wall turbulent shear flows, free surface flows, and free tubulence shear flows.
