Now in its fifth edition, this text provides a thorough analysis of materials science and engineering in an easy-to-read style. It analyes the basic concepts and their applications to enable students to gain a full understanding of the subject.
The book begins with a clear explanation of chemical equilibrium, kinetics, atomic structure and chemical bonding. This is folowed by a detailed discussion of the structure of solids, crystal imperfections, phase diagrams, diffusion in solids and phase transformation. The mechanical properties described include elastic, anelastic and visco elastic behaviour, plastic deformation, and creep and fracture phenomena. The last four chapters are devoted to a detailed description of electrical properties – conduction, superconductivity, semiconductor, and magnetic and dielectric.
