Synopsis
This book is the first volume of Crossing North to South, describing the life of the Chinese intellectuals and the national elites as well as their story of fleeing from the enemy territory to the southwest. Starting from Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937, then the fall of Tientsin, it covers the years when Peking University, Tsinghua, Nankai University and other universities moved to the southwest to manage education successively in Changsha, Kunming and Mengzi, and the hardships that the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, Tongji University and the Institute for Research in Chinese Architecture (IRCA) went through in years of the Anti-Japanese War. It lays the emphasis on the description of the life, academic achievements, spirit and sentiment of Cai Yuanpei, Hu Shi, Chen Yinque, Fu Sinian, Liang Si-cheng, Li Ji, Lin Huiyin, Jin Yuelin, Mei Yi-qi, Feng Youlan and other intellectuals. With rich contents and grand purport, it can be said to be the group sculpture of the Chinese intellectuals in the Anti-Japanese War period.
