Synopsis

1.This book is written in three parts. Part I in seven chapters introduces the basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine. This consists of the theory of yin-yang, the five elements, zangfu, channels and collaterals, qi, blood, body fluid, etiology, diagnosis, and differentiation of syndromes. To emphasize theory at the beginning of the book is to lay a sound foundation for the study of acupuncture and moxibustion-an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine-taking this theory as a guide in clinical practice. 2. Part II consists of three chapters. It gives a general sketch of the channel and points, detailing the courses of the 1 2 channels, the extra channels, the points of each channel and the extraordinary points. The source material of the 1 2 regular channels is taken from An Essay on Channels from Lingshu and that of the 8 extra channels is taken mainly from A Classic of Difficult Questions. As to the location of the points, A Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion has been consulted, and the Illustrated Manual on the Points for Acupuncture and Moxibustion as Shown on the Bronze Figure, the Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, etc. have been referred to. The localization of the points is explained according to anatomical landmarks on the body surface and the locating methods that have been long in use in clinical practice. For precision, the regional anatomy including vasculature and innervation of each point are mentioned. They may also serve as references for the readers. 3. Part Ill deals with acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. The first chapter lays stress on acupuncture technique using the filiform needle and methods using other types of needle, as well as moxibustion technique. Manipulation methods in acupuncture and moxibustion introduced in this book are easy to master and practical for clinical use. Difficult and rare methods are not presented.
