Intended mainly as a scientific probe, the design criteriaspecified that the spacecraft had to use current or near-futuretechnology and had to be able to reach its destination within a humanlifetime. Alan Bond led a team of scientists and engineers who proposedusing a fusion rocket to reach Barnard's Star, only 5.9 light yearsaway. The trip was estimated to take 50 years, but the design wasrequired to be flexible enough that it could be sent to any of a numberof other target stars. Daedalus would be constructed in Earth orbit andhave an initial mass of 54,000 tonnes, including 50,000 tonnes of fueland 500 tonnes of scientific payload.
