An exemplary conservation manual, this Russo-Finnish collaboration has 11 editors and presents its text in both Russian and English. The area of the Leningrad region (the Soviet name has been retained, though not for its capital city) extends to the current Finnish border and the southern half of Lake Ladoga in the north, to the borders of Estonia in the west and to Lake Onega in the east. Each species is described, illustrated, mapped and assigned a conservation status; its distribution and ecology are discussed along with limiting factors, conservation measures needed and citation of relevant literature. The zoological volume treats 298 species.
