Synopsis
Preface These papers, except for my own, were presented originally as talks given in conjunction with a series of seminars sponsored by the Institute for Community Development and Services at Michigan State University. The seminars were devoted to the problem of finding ways, if they exist, for applying the accumulated relevant knowledge of the various fields of higher education to the public policy issues which confront American urban society. It is the hope of members of the Institute that laymen, various kinds of professional practitioners in urban communities, and academic scholars will all find the ideas and the analytical processes discussed here to be helpful. In some instances, part of the material will already be familiar to the reader, at least if we do succeed in reaching the varied audience we think can benefit from the book, but there should be something worthwhile for each person who chooses to study the ideas of three outstanding persons from the fields of political science, sociology and urban planning.
