Synopsis
This book is a collection of essays and illustrations about one of the brightest periods in the life of St. Petersburg: the first third of the 19th century. They create a collective portrait of the city one hundred years ago: its administration, city services and economy, city planning and architecture, social structure, fleet, and army. Most of the book is taken short biographical sketches of the most influential and famous citizens of that period: politicians, local government, scholars, writers and educators. The last chapter includes essays about the most significant sites and landscapes of St. Petersburg. The book is illustrated on almost every page with engravings by R.P. and P.R. Kostylev.
